French Alps and Poppy Field

June 11, 2012

This is a oil painting of some French Alps. I painted the foreground by splattering paint onto the canvas in many layers to give it the feel of sprouting grass. The clouds are blocked in with thick white brush strokes. I am going to take a road trip across the United States very soon and photograph the varied and spectacular views. When I arrive in California I will create many more of these large scale painterly expanses. Here are some inprogress photograhps of my newest painting, 9x4.5 feet. I start my largest paintings with discount house paint found at Home Depot, Lowes and dumpsters. This allows me to use lots of paint at a low cost to create a good first layer. The rest of the painting I will use oil paints to create the beautiful pastel colors I want...

Commissioned Portrait of my Grandfather

September 20, 2010

Commissioned by my Great Uncle, this painting is a collaboration between myself and my Aunt Dorothy. Dorothy took the original photograph of my Grandfather Jimmy and I created an oil painting from the photo. Dorothy is a wonderful photographer and if you would like to see more of her work her website is http://deedeeoho.blogspot.com/ This was a very challenging and rewarding portrait to paint. The two main challenges were painting the foliage with its light detail and varied depth of field and rendering a likeness of my Grandfather. Luckily while painting this I was reading "Great Women Masters of Art" by Jordi Vigue. In his historic book he gives a biography and detailed descriptions of all of the well known female artists and their paintings in western society starting from the 16th century until present. The women back then were masters at portraits and their works gave me inspiration as well as great humility.
